Refurbishment and Fitouts


Building refurbishments and fitouts are another specialised area where DGS have excelled over many years. These projects usually require additional care due to occupation of premises, heritage significance or other specified condition. DGS have a wealth of experience in dealing with every situation that may arise from Hospital Emergency Units, to Police Stations to Historical Renovations. No challenge or situation is to difficult for us to handle. Maintaining safety for the occupants and general public is paramount while minimising inconvenience, dust, noise and damage to existing property are always a priority. Some examples as below:

Manly Hospital – Intensive Care Unit

Construction of a new specialist ICU for Manly Hospital, including provisions for medical gases, air-conditioning, waiting and isolation rooms, highly specialised electrical connections, and other various services all integrated with the existing hospital systems. This first floor addition and refurbishment required all work to be done while the Hospital continued to operate with minimal disruption. The project was fitted out with the necessary equipment to make this a modern and effective first class intensive care unit for both staff and patients. Significant structural underpinning and decontamination works was a feature of the works, all now hidden from view.

Mona Vale Hospital – Emergency Department

DGS were engaged to undertake the demolition of the existing ER building and re-construction of the Emergency department. Early works included extensive asbestos de-contamination ensuring that all future works togther with ongoing maintenance could be carried out in safety by all. This new building required all the specialised services required for a new ER including provisions for medical gases, air-conditioning, waiting and isolation rooms, highly specialised electrical connections, and other various services all integrated with the existing hospital systems. A complex project, which also incorporated upgrades to sections of the existing buildings, while the rest of the Hospital continued to operate as normal.

Young Street Terraces, Young Street, Sydney

These almost 200 year old terraces that originally housed nurses was in a dilapidated state and required extensive internal works to bring it back to a habitable state. To comply with the various heritage requirements DGS was needed to source original timber species for upgrading the windows, doors and stairways as well as performing the works using original tradesmen’s tools and methods

Ministry for the Arts (Former Earth Exchange Building) – The Rocks, Sydney

This Heritage building in Hickson Road the rocks required DGS to complete demolition of some recent tenants partitions and then proceed to upgrade to restore the internal sections bak to their original conditions as well as provide some modern enhancements.

Lands Building, Bridge Street, Sydney

The highly significant heritage Sydney building required extensive roofing upgrades. Work comprised of new copper roofs, roof plumbing, and flashings to the domed roofs. New slated roofs and extensive repairs to the stone parapets. Specialised craftsmen with their unique skills were resourced in order to carry out this work which was required to be done in “heritage” fashion with the use of today’s modern methods and fasteners. Slate was imported from England.

Conservatory of Music, Macquarie Street, Sydney

The Conservatorium of Music fitout required many specialist trades to be engaged to cater for critical elements such as sound absorption to their many music rooms. So partitions some with as many as 88 layers of plasterboard and specially selected insulation were installed. These were complemented by acoustic ceilings, doors and windows. Provision for services was critical and so electrical and mechanical connections were most important for maintaining ideal conditions while instruments and the like were played.

Hyde Park Barracks, Sydney

This historic building required alterations and additions including works the restoration of the famous “archaeology” room. Ag old craftsman skills were employed during this delicate process of displaying the almost 200 year old artefacts and buildings.

Refurbishment of the Radiology Department in the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney

A relatively small yet very complex upgrade inside RNS Hospital to provide the new Radiology department with highly sophisticated equipment facilities all while the Hospital continued wit normal operations.

Police Centre, Parramatta

The fitout of 7 floors for the NSW Police Department’s administration facilities and their various sections. The fitout included for floating floors , complex electrical and data systems, high security control systems together with new partitions, ceilings and all finishes and services.

Youth and Community Services, Parramatta

This fitout consisted of providing new partitions, ceilings, finishes, fittings and fixtures to the offices together with all the required services.

NSW Lotteries Office, Burwood

Fitout for the Lottery offices premises at Burwood including the provision for strict security systems and all other specialised services. Partitions, ceilings, joinery, fixtures and finishes completed the works.
